We took a day off! Or at least, part of a day off 🙂 I got up early to frost and deliver a birthday cake to my niece Kylie for her 10th birthday. It was so nice to be able to do that for her. To somehow make it special even though there is no chance for her to celebrate her birthday like other years.
After I dropped off the cake, I stopped off at a nursery to buy a bunch of plants for my mom on my way home. Home for an hour or so to finish the one dessert that I didn't get done yesterday (an elegantly simple Pavlova with Fresh Berries and Whipped Cream) and then we packed a cooler and headed up to the beach.
Spent the entire afternoon dozing in our little sunshade, talking and soaking up the air. The beach parking lot was packed, but we walked about a mile down the beach and found a secluded area in the dunes. A delicious picnic of cold roast chicken, Garganelli with Pistou and cherry tomatoes, snap peas, cucumber and thinly sliced summer squash from my garden. Leftover seared tuna and green beans from the Niçoise salad and a nice stinky cheese with thin crackers. Pretty darn perfect.
Felt so good to get some sun and sea air blowing through us. I even got a little nap in.
Stopped off at my mom's on the way back to carry the plants and potting soil up onto her porch and have a short visit. I will be back tomorrow for deliveries in Point Reyes, so it didn't feel terrible to leave when we did. Home now to get the sourdough set up and jump in the shower before diving into the sheets. It was nice to have a day off, and seems like a fitting way to welcome in our 100th day of MARTHA AVENUE tomorrow! I will have to think of some way to commemorate it....

I hope that you all found some summer feeling this weekend. A moment to feel the air on your face, the sun on the back of your neck, the sweet taste of watermelon. Everything seems more precious or fragile right now to me. I was thinking ahead to the winter and thinking that this is looking like its shaping up to be the first holiday season since I was in college that I won't be working a show or at Dickens' Faire or being Missus Claus at some party. Trying to see the possibilities... or to steal a mantra from Michael Phillis, to "run towards delight". May we all find a little something to delight us this week.
For now, a shower and my bed sound delightful. Sleep well all. May the insomnia fairies leave you alone. Sending virtual hugs..really strong ones. xoxo
