Started my day with some Swiss chard and broccolini braised in some of our Pomodoro Sauce with a couple of poached eggs and a slice of sourdough. Lunch was salad of greens picked from my little garden plot and a bowl of Butternut Squash Soup. I am convincing myself that it's important for me to taste-test all our wares. :-)
Just a quick trip to the store today... definitely seeing a shift in the insanity of the shopping situation from what it was a few weeks ago. Now there is really no line to get in, folks are all masked and for the most part doing some social distancing. I still feel like people are less conscious of social distancing when they are masked, but it is still better than nothing.
Spent the day making gnocchi, prepping sourdough for an early bake and enjoying a rather easy day. My son, Jack, came over for dinner and we made mushrooms three different ways, BBQ chicken with our Blueberry-Chipotle BBQ sauce, corn on the cob, salad from the garden and an apple crisp. So good to get to see him again. He had been working a COVID testing site (he's an EMT) and had to stay away to make sure that he wasn't bringing anything home to the house. Now that assignment is over, he quarantined himself for a week and then was tested to make sure that he wasn't carrying the virus. Now he's "clean" so he's safe to come over and have dinner with us again. And it was great.
Willi brought home over ten pounds of mushrooms yesterday. Morels, and porcini and puffballs. He took the porcini and shaved them thinly and tossed them with lemon and olive oil and shaved parmesan. The puffballs and morels he grilled outside. Puffballs end up very much like tofu.... sort of firm on the outside and almost pudding-like on the inside. The morels were meaty and delish.
We played a couple of games of Blokus... a game that I love mostly because the tiles are pretty. Sort of a tetras strategy game. We are missing a few pieces so there are a couple of little pieces of paper cut out to replace those tiles. Feels like the sort of thing that would happen to a game at a lake house or a vacation home. In fact, some of this quarantine feels like time in a vacation home.... all the ads for jigsaw puzzles, the eating to much, the lack of a firm schedule, the game nights. So much of this quarantine was/is difficult and stressful, but there are nights that feel special too. Today was a day that I had planned to clean house...ah well...maybe Tuesday.
After dinner and the games, I got an email about a free refrigerator that my neighbor Peggy had told me about on Craiglist. The guy said that his first hit had not shown up and that the fridge was sitting on the sidewalk. He said that he was letting all the interested people know so it was first come, first served. Willi and I jumped in the car and drove over to the lower Haight, found the fridge on the sidewalk, backed the car up onto the curb and slid the fridge into the back of my car. I love my car. I hope it never ever dies. Now we have an extra fridge! Got it home and set it up on the front porch. It will be so much easier to keep supplies in that fridge and alleviate the extra coolers and dry ice that we have been maintaining.
Looking forward to seeing my mom tomorrow for a short (distanced) visit, and then doing this zoom performance tomorrow night for Playground as part of their anniversary program. Fingers crossed that I can figure out all the tech end of things!
Menu for Wednesday (SF and East Bay Delivery) is posted below. Orders for Wednesday should be placed by Monday evening/Tuesday morning. We have morels to sell as well, so if you are interested, let me know. Half a pound for $15. That's about a dinner plate full, if that helps.
I hope that your evening was good. That you found peace or laughter or inspiration or a good story to read/watch. I hope that you take a moment to appreciate your hard working body and how much your community means to you. Be good to yourself. Be kinder than necessary. Hug your people. Hug yourself for me. xoxo
